Is there really a conspiracy to discourage American Muslims from studying Islam overseas? As promised, AMT probes further into discouraging stories and recent negative reports from the field in Yemen.
We spoke with the reporter who first broke the story, Kitty Caperrella of the Philly Daily News and find out how she came upon this story. We'll also try to gain insight as to what was the true message of her piece.
[Q]: What are the foundations that will enable the Islaamic world to arise again anew? [1]
[A]: That which I believe, is what has been reported in the authentic hadeeth – which is a clear answer to this question, and to those questions similar to it which are asked in our present time – and that is the statement of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), “When you deal in 'eenah (a transaction involving usury), take hold of the tails of cows, become content with agriculture and abandon jihaad in the Path of Allaah, then Allaah will permit your humiliation and He will not remove it from you, until you return to your Religion.” [2] Thus, the foundation is the return to Islaam.

Will preventing American Muslims from studying overseas stop or spread extremism?
An article appearing in a Philadelphia newspaper is ripe with all the action, intrigue & danger of a Hollywood James Bond film. The story chronicles the adventures of 3 Philly area Muslims who left their jobs and families in search of higher Islamic education. However, their spiritual trip overseas proved perilous once they ran into local Yemeni authorities and were arrested with no charge and no hope of getting out. Some might say, "all of this just to study a religion?" Of course, degrees in Islamic and religious Studies can be obtained in local Universities, but these certificates often lack the 'street cred' needed to reach young Muslim converts in the inner-city. Another problem is that these university studies are often seen as useless to some because they fail to employ the only methodological approach that many young converts accept: the Salafi methodology. 1

These days in which the world is in a panic over the Swine Flu pandemic there are a few places in which there is absolute calm... the Muslim world. As you know, Islam not only prohibits the eating of pork, but the sale and consumption of pigs and their by products. The swine flu most likely originated from a sick pig whose disease mutated into something that can be passed from human to human. Muslims are pretty pleased with the ruling from Allah right about now and others are are becoming interested in our stance. This flu outbreak is bound to have hellish repercussions on the Pork industry as demand for it will almost certainly plummet.
As such, I thought it a good time to reflect on the details concerning why Muslims don't eat pork as the topic must now be on a lot of peoples mind. Below is an answer to this question posed to Sh. Muhammad Salih Al-Munajjid.
Are erectile dysfunction drugs permissible in Islam?
While it may be an embarrassing issue to be mentioned by a scholar or the common folk, I must admit that it is a noble act to have asked such a question at all. As the Shaykh mentions in his introduction, we are living in days and times in which the desires have run wild. As a result, people act without any regard for the Islamic rulings regarding their actions. This brief reply from one of our honorable and notable scholars, Shaykh Mashoor H. Salmaan of Jordan, is another reminder of our constant need for the scholars for advice on every aspect of our lives, public and private.
“The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact, non-Westerners never do.”
